Seven Segment Display Overview

These displays are logic-compatible and can handle a maximum drive current of 20mA with a forward voltage drop of approximately 2V.

Calculating Resistor Values for LEDs

When operating at 5V, a 150-ohm resistor is ideal for limiting current to ensure maximum brightness when driving the displays in static mode (with each segment lit constantly).

However, when driving displays in a multiplexed mode, where each digit is lit only part of the time, the maximum allowable current can increase to 60mA. In this case, higher current is needed for brightness, and a 50-ohm resistor is recommended for optimal performance. For applications where maximum brightness is not necessary, resistors in the range of 75 to 91 ohms work well.
